Shihwen Wang Receives Idea Award from Design Ignites Change

Shihwen Wang (MFA 2010) has been presented with an Idea Award from Design Ignites Change for her thesis project ECODE, a theoretical labeling system that combines hundreds of eco-labels into one concise system. View the brochure above.

Before ECODE

Now employed at LUNAR Design’s San Francisco office, Shihwen’s thesis project sought to simplify the process of responsible labeling. Recognizing the proliferation of individual eco-labels such as those marking products as certified organic, fair trade, made with recycled content, etc., she developed the ECODE to cut through the confusing clutter of inconsistency and function as one label with all environmentally and socially responsible information readily available and easy to find.

With ECODE

The ECODE is comprised of a logo, a barcode, and icons. The barcode — which can be scanned using a hypothetical ECODE iPhone app — records detailed product information, and the icons provide consumers with at-a-glance information about the environmental aspects of the product.

Design Ignites Change awarded Shihwen with an Idea Award, given to projects that have compelling solutions to social problems but aren’t currently feasible for implementation, and $500. Competitions for Idea Awards and Implementation Awards are held twice a year. Learn more about the competition and enter your project here. The next deadline is December 31, 2010.
