Kanoe Irvine and Angela Heath are two BFA students who are fulfilling more than their graphic design ambitions this semester at the Academy of Art University. They’re also on the volleyball team, which just finished a winning season this past week in Hawaii. We asked Kanoe how she manages to balance it all, between class loads, practice, and games.
Originally from Hawaii, Kanoe (#1), the team’s libero, was on her high school’s volleyball and paddling teams. She received the 2009 Team Player award for volleyball. So, how does she manage her time between classes and volleyball games? Kanoe says she typically uses the three hours between classes and practice to do the day’s assignments while they’re still fresh in her mind. Being on the road, she says, is harder because there is a constant schedule, so she finishes as much before she heads off, or ends up working on the plane.
A freshman, Kanoe is new to the team, but says she’s seen significant development throughout the season, and is optimistic about next year.
Fellow graphic design student, and teammate, Angela Heath (#43) is also from Hawaii. She played volleyball throughout high school, earning captain honors starting her freshman year, and was a member of the Junior National Team from 2000-2006.
Though it’s tough to balance it all, Kanoe and Angela say they’re up for the challenge. They are proud to be Urban Knights and are happy to have the opportunity to compete in a sport they love, while pursuing a career in graphic design.
Mary Scott (aka Honorary Coach) cheers the girls on.
