Winter Show and Portfolio Review Friday, December 16th

The School of Graphic Design is holding its annual Winter Show and Portfolio Review on Friday, December 16th, and you’re invited. There will be 36 MFA and BFA graduating students showing their portfolios. As with all of the School of Graphic Design portfolio reviews, there will be a jury of industry professionals reviewing the student portfolios and awarding scholarships. The Winter Show 2011 jury includes: Mick Hodgson, Ph.D; Dora Drimalas and Brian Flynn, Hybrid Design; Michael McQueen, Ammunition Group; and Rob Duncan, Dowling|Duncan.

Mick Hodgson, Winter Show Chair, Owner, Creative Director and chief tea maker, Ph.D, began his career at the influential magazine Harpers & Queen, where he served as art director for five years. He is President Emeritus of AIGA Los Angeles and serves on the advisory board of the AIGA Center for Sustainable Design, where he has been instrumental in recruiting over 100,000 design firms (and counting) to sign the Designers Accord, a Kyoto treaty for responsible design. In 2007 he was named an AIGA Fellow, the highest honor awarded by AIGA chapters.

Dora Drimalas, Principal, Creative Director, Hybrid Design, is known for her award-winning work with Nike. Having embraced a Swiss-grid approach to her creative work, Dora represents the logical side of Hybrid Design. But logic doesn’t preclude exploration as clients such as Nike, Apple, TED, FRS Healthy Energy and Starwood Hotels and Resorts can attest. As a collector of vintage dishes, furniture and design and children’s books, Dora employs discovery in her own pet project, Hybrid-Home.

Brian Flynn, Principal, Owner, Hybrid Design, is a versatile creative director and product designer. After working in-house at both Nike and Fossil Watches, Brian co-founded Hybrid Design with his wife and co-creative director Dora Drimalas. Clients include Nike, Apple, TED and Juxtapoz Magazine. With a love for chaos theory, Brian’s creative approach manifests the experimental side of Hybrid Design. It also plays out in Super7, originally a pet project that has evolved into a thriving retail brand.

Michael McQueen, Design Director, Ammunition Group, received his MFA in 2006 from the School of Graphic Design. He is Creative Director at Ammunition, where he manages experience design solutions across an ever-expanding range of screens and devices. Michael’s 10 years of experience in graphic and interactive design span multiple media, ranging from brand identity and packaging, to next generation digital UI and unique one-off interactive installations. His clients include Autodesk, Barnes & Noble, DIRECTV, EA, Johnson & Johnson, Kohler, Microsoft, Nike, Nielsen, and Williams-Sonoma.

Rob Duncan, Creative Director, Dowling|Duncan, has worked with leading design companies on both sides of the Atlantic. He has worked at Mytton Williams in Bath, in Pentagram’s London and San Francisco offices, and at Apple, prior to establishing his own studio, Dowling|Duncan, working with clients such as Gap, Kodak, HP, Mars and Google. Rob’s work has been widely published in design press and books. He has also received awards from D&AD, the Scottish Design Awards, the Art Directors Club of New York, AIGA, Graphis, Communications Arts, and the New York Festivals Award. Rob is currently Education Chair for the San Francisco chapter of AIGA.

Stop by and meet our students and judges and mix and mingle with industry colleagues.
