A luxury clothing line by Graphic Design graduate Tebo Dambe was featured on the Nov. 6 episode of Lifetime TV Network’s dance series Step It Up, airing at 9 p.m. (8 p.m. Central).

For Step It Up, a dance reality docu-series, Dambe’s Lisaraye Inspired Collection was worn on the runway by the members of the Young Contemporary Dance Theatre. While some of the dancers modeled the collection, other members of the group performed dance routines led by their instructor, Traci Young-Byron.

Dambe continues to employ the graphic design skills she learned at the Academy, as evidenced in her latest promo piece.

“It’s very exciting to be able to be part of the energy and exuberance of Step It Up, as we’ve had a great history dressing successful celebrities, politicians and public figures,” says Dambe. “Our entire team will be rooting for Traci Young-Byron and the powerful dancers that are part of her Young Contemporary Dance Theatre.”

Although she graduated from Academy of Art University with a BFA from the School of Graphic Design in 2004, it’s in fashion design that Dambe has built a thriving career.

Botswana-born, now in Los Angeles, Dambe is CEO and creative director of her eponymous women’s and men’s luxury fashion house. She sets the season aesthetic, design direction and product designs for the firm, including selecting fabrics and color palettes for all categories of the brand.

And while her business is fashion, Dambe stills seeks advice from the person she calls her mentor: Mary Scott, executive director of the Graphic Design School.

Dambe says that although it’s been a decade since she graduated, “I still call Mary Scott for help. Being at the Academy has been the best thing I’ve done. I still use what I learned from school in my clothing business brand.”
